Drive-Thru Miracle

Dana Edwards

Eleven-year-old Mae spends her summer at the Piggly Wiggly. Her mother is the head cashier there, and Mae loves Miss Fannie’s yummy cookies sold in the bakery. But when Mae discovers that folks in town are visiting the church’s drive-thru prayer, she’s determined to find out what they’re praying for.        First, she spies on Bubba. He became Mae’s #1 enemy in the second grade when he started calling her Patch due to the patch she wore to correct a lazy eye. She started calling him Double Wide on account of his XXL size and because he lives in an actual double wide trailer.        Then she secretly sees Davis Hampton, the town’s hero at the drive-thru. His prayer is obvious since the Atlanta Braves released him from the team. But Mae is shocked when she sees her best friend, Jimmy Mac, there. She doesn’t know that Jimmy Mac’s parents are getting a divorce and his mama won’t get out of bed.        Mae’s convinced they’re all wasting their time. She gave up on prayer since her older sister, Shelby, still has cerebral palsy.        But one evening everything changes when Mae is left to care for Shelby. She has a seizure it’s up to Mae, Jimmy Mac, and Bubba to get her to the hospital. At the same time, her parents are in an accident with a train and two people from out of town. At the hospital, Mae introduces the brothers/hosts of the Flip This Flop show to Miss Fannie’s cookies. They decide to bring their show to Jessup. Miss Fannie has a chance to win a renovated bakery; she just has to beat the town’s richest lady in a bake sale.        Fannie wins when Davis ditches a tryout and borrows a school bus to bring in Fannie’s neighbors from the trailer park. Mae later runs into the scout for the Atlanta Braves, and she trades him a cookie for a second-chance tryout. Davis plays ball again and Mae is convinced Shelby knows she loves her—the real miracle she’s always hoped for.
