CHILD OF THE FLOWER-SONG PEOPLE: LUZ JIMÉNEZ, DAUGHTER OF THE NAHUA

Gloria Amescua

Child Of The Flower-Song People: Luz Jiménez, Daughter Of The Nahua is a picture book biography about an Indigenous Mexican girl in the early 1900s who listened to stories of her community’s joys, suffering, and survival, and wove them into her heart, sharing her and her people’s legacy with future generations. Luz Jiménez wanted more than anything to be a teacher, despite the Mexican government’s attempted erasure of native culture and language. Though the Mexican Revolution seemed to destroy her dream, Luz became a model for internationally celebrated 20th-century artists such as Diego Rivera, who wanted to show the true face of Mexico, and she worked with scholars to preserve Nahuatl language and stories. She became a very important link between the indigenous people of Mexico and the rest of the world, becoming a teacher after all.
