Prisoner 88

Leah Pileggi

It's 1885, and ten-year-old Jake Oliver Evans has been sentenced to 5 years in the Idaho Penitentiary for shooting a man who had threatened his father. How will he survive his time in the Old Pen?This story is based on a real ten-year-old boy who was in a saloon with his father in Soda Springs, Idaho in 1885 when a fight broke out. In the mayhem, he picked up a gun and shot a man, presumably thinking that the man was going to kill his father. Prisoner 88 was written using extensive research that uncovered newspaper articles, trial transcripts and letters, and the history of the Old Idaho Penitentiary. That included prisoners using dynamite to blast rock to build the walls of the Penitentiary.
