But even as their affection grows, Griffin must keep the secret of his true nature from her. When Griffin uses his supernatural powers in front of Katie, she refuses to accept the possibility her boyfriend is an angel, even after he reluctantly admits it to her. Griffin is broken-hearted when she rejects him. Finally, the true identities of Basil and Griffin are revealed when the Terra Angeli save Katie and her parents from a fire. But fortune turns against Griffin; as the winter solstice arrives, he discovers his former master, the vengeful Mentor Nicopolis, will be overseeing his Proelium. After a brutal battle, Griffin emerges victorious and he looks forward to completing his apprenticeship at Basil’s side. However, Nicopolis lies about the outcome of the test. Despite Basil’s valiant efforts, humanity is forced upon the young angel. Now Griffin faces the greatest challenge of his life-how to survive as a mortal.
