The Adventures of Deborah and Kite at the Big River

Gillian Kingsley

This is an adventure story about an inquisitive young honey bee called Deborah, who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to a far away land at the Big River.Deborah is the daughter of Queen Miriam and heir to the throne of the Bluebell Meadows colony on the edge of the Ancient Forest. But she does not feel ready for the heavy responsibility of ruling and reigning and decides to follow her dreams to find the golden flowers at the Big River far away. This decision would lead to an adventure that would change the lives of every bee in the colony.Leaving the comfort of the bee's nest and all that is dear to her, Deborah sets off to find the golden flowers in a distant unfamiliar land. On her journey, she meets new friend, Emeth the butterfly who becomes her guide and leads her to the sunflower meadows at the Big River. Together they meet Kite, a young fledgling eagle, who is afraid of heights. But Deborah's adventure is about to become more than she ever expected. The story unfolds into a tale of search and rescue beyond her wildest dreams as Deborah makes a surprising discovery. Her long-lost uncle Albert, the queen’s brother, has been seen alive and could be living somewhere along the Big River! Uncle Albert went missing from the colony a long time ago and was presumed to be gone forever.A rescue mission ensues and Deborah’s young brother, Tadpole, is desperate to be part of it. He decides he must join his sister. So the four unlikely friends, Deborah, Kite, Emeth, and Tadpole begin their search to find clues that could lead them to Albert. They must face many unexpected dangers along the way; the mean magpie twins who want to eat Deborah and Emeth for supper; the hungry pike; hundreds of huge, colorful dragonflies; and a menacing, bee-eating spider.Deborah also has a mysterious, life-changing encounter with the sunflowers who sing a song to her that only she can hear. 'The Ancient Song of Bees' awakens a dormant desire and passion in Deborah to sing and release the freedom to sing in others. On her return to Bluebell Meadows, she must question the 'no-singing rule' that has kept the colony silent in their work for generations. She must bravely confront her mother the queen and the royal advisors to uncover a family secret; a secret that has been robbing the bees of their heritage of singing.Because Deborah took a risk to leave all that is familiar and embrace the call to adventure, the life of every bee in the colony would be changed forever.
