Nancy Bentley, The First Australian Female Sailor

Tracey Hawkins

This is the true story of 6 year-old Nancy Bentley who was bitten by a snake on the foreshore of Port Arthur, Tasmania in 1920. With no medical help nearby, her father rowed her out to the HMAS Sydney that was docked in the harbour. She was taken aboard the ship and given urgent medical treatment by the ship's surgeon. The King's rules didn't allow for women to be aboard a Naval ship so the Captain enlisted 6 year old Nancy into the Royal Australian Navy for a period of 8 days until she was well again. She was then discharged into her parents care.
