Set in the Desert Southwest during the pre-contact 1500's, a Pueblo boy named Two Birds raises an abandoned wolf pup. One night, nearly grown, the wolf hears the call of the pack. It has to leave. Pushing through a mix of emotions, the boy realizes his love for the wolf is greater than his need to be near it, and he wishes his friend well as it returns to the wild. But through caring for and telling stories about his pup, Two Birds has learned to let go - not just of the wolf, but also of his own fears and inhibitions. This piece of historical fiction weaves together themes of community, tradition, self-respect, and respect for all life to create a realistic portrait of a culture that continues to exert a vibrant, living influence today.
