Former slave Sarah E. Goode goes north to Chicago with freedom in her pocket, hope in her heart, and dreams swirling in her head. She marries a carpenter, learns the trade, and listens to her furniture store customers. Then she designs AND builds an innovative cabinet bed that will help save space in crowded living quarters. Sarah applies for a patent and becomes one of the first African Americans to own one. She built more than a piece of furniture...she built a life far away from slavery...a life where her sweet dreams, and those of others, could come true.
