MANUSCRIPT GUIDELINES

MANUSCRIPT GUIDELINES:

A professionally formatted submission shows that you understand the business of writing and publishing for children.

Step 1. Check the faculty's information to ensure your preferred faculty member offers critiques for your manuscript’s genre.

Step 2. Polish your PB submission OR your novel submission (includes Chapter Books, MG, YA, GN text, Verse novels)

Step 3: Prepare using these guidelines

Picture Book

  • First 500 - 600 words for fiction. First 800 - 1000 words for non-fiction.
  • Text or PB Dummy but faculty may only review the text depending on what you signed up for.

Novel (includes Chapter Books, MG, YA, GN text, Verse novels)

  • Submit only the first 10 pages of one manuscript, even if it cuts off in the middle of a chapter.
  • No word count needed.

Graphic Novel

  • Depending on if there are sketches or text only, use discretion. We suggest single space, with line breaks.
  • 10 pages.

Illustrators

  • For portfolio reviews, upload a folder or add a hyperlink to an online portfolio. We suggest 6 pieces.

Step 4. Make a single document.

  • Double spaced (novels in verse may use single spacing), 1-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman Font, black color
  • First page, upper left corner: Name, Email, Category (PB, CB, MG, GN, YA, NF), Genre (if applicable)
  • Page numbers in the upper right corner: PAGE #, Last Name/TITLE
  • Word.docx files only
  • Label file: LastName_Title_Faculty.docx (we're not strict, just get the info into the title somehow)
  • OPTIONAL: Add the query or pitch to the first page (this will make the file 11 pages, that is allowed so long as page 1 does not have the story on it)

Step 5. Submit below!

HOW TO SUBMIT:

  • Important deadline: Submit your materials BY Sept 30th 9pm
  • The link to upload your materials is in the MY EVENTS tab of your Member Home.
  • Each faculty has their OWN submission form.

QUESTIONS?
