When writing middle grade, there can be a tendency of shying away from depicting extreme emotions in children, especially rage. But our goal as writers is to create three dimensional characters that lean away from cliches. In this intensive, we will dive into constructing compelling character sketches by asking the right questions to our protagonists that go beyond judgement of what is ‘good” or ‘bad’ behavior. We will analyze scenes from contemporary middle grade books and generate creative work followed by each tip.
