Whether you have just one hour a week to spare or several, volunteering can be a rewarding experience in so many ways.

Deputy Editor
Events Editor
Network News Editor

Debut Journeys Feature Editor
Contributors – this could be for one-off articles or series
Most of us are motivated by being a part of SCBWI and sharing our expertise and knowledge with the community. It doesn't stop there though! You can enjoy benefits such as: discounts on membership and on the conference (where applicable); unique opportunities to network; and simply getting your name, face and work out there.
Editor
REGULARLY
Check email and deal with issues arising.
Engage with W&P volunteers to share ideas and make sure they are happy.
Engage with SCBWI community to look for items that would make interesting
features.
Promote W&P within SCWBI and on social media.
Commission and post one-off features or new series.
Create schedule, keep it up to date and share with editors.
OCCASIONALLY
Stand in for Production Editor when necessary.
Deal with issues relating to W&P volunteers, including covering absences, recruiting
and
training new volunteers and resolving problems.
Attend Steering Committee meetings.
Take ownership of the Production Editor’s weekly responsibilities once a month.
TIME COMMITMENT Around 2.5 hours per week.
Deputy Editor
WEEKLY
Liaise with Chief Sub-editor and deal with any necessary problems/schedule changes when
they occur.
REGULARLY
Check email and deal with issues arising.
Engage with SCBWI community to look for items that would make interesting
features.
Promote W&P within SCWBI and on social media.
Commission and post one-off features.
Take ownership of the Production Editor’s weekly responsibilities once a month.
OCCASIONALLY
Stand in for Production Editor when necessary.
Stand in for Editor when necessary.
TIME COMMITMENT Around 2.5 hours per week.
REWARD Full membership and at least one big event, e.g. virtual weekend and/or
conference.
Production Editor
EVERY OTHER WEEK
Monday: Check schedule and post on FB Editor group and Sub-editor group
what is expected that week.
Alert Editor/Deputy Editor of any problems or delays.
Thursday/Friday: Check all posts are in, alert subs on FB Sub-editor page to
check them.
Friday/Saturday: read over all the posts, alert social media editor that the
issue is ready.
Train new sub-editors
TIME COMMITMENT Around 1.5 hours per week.
Sub-Editor
You will be allocated one article per week where available unless you let us know that you
are unavailable. You may not get an allocation some weeks and if you do, this is often
between Thursday and Saturday mornings.
Ensure the article is sense-checked, grammatically correct and in line with the house style.
To submit your allocation by Saturday afternoon ready for publication the next day.
Who knows where it may lead to – which is what makes volunteering for Words & Pictures magazine that much more exciting and rewarding.
