Once Upon a Rhyme:

Exploring Children's Poetry Markets

Whether your writing leans humor or heartfelt, children's poetry offers an outlet for short-form creativity--and maybe a chance to get paid, too! Most poets don't reap huge profits or major prestige, but poetry can help you connect with the writing community and serve as a stepping stone. Plus, whether you're in between books or still trying to break in, it lets you stretch your creative muscles and improve your craft, especially if you write picture books! This session will cover paid and unpaid opportunities to publish children's poetry in collections, anthologies, magazines, with educational publishers, and online, both on your own or through other online publications. We'll also discuss poetry submission etiquette and provide a list of recommended books, websites and other resources for further exploration.

Susan Johnston Taylor made her trade debut with the STEM poetry collection Animals in Surprising Shades: Poems About Earth's Colorful Creatures, which won an SCBWI Crystal Kite Award. Her next children's poetry collection, If Pets Wrote Poems, unleashes March 10, 2026. She's also keynoted for the SCBWI Wisconsin regional conference and published poetry in two anthologies, online with The Dirigible Balloon, and in Boston University's alumni magazine Bostonia (go, Terriers!).
