Jewel Davis, Caldecott Committee Chair

Jewel Davis is the Director of the Instructional Materials Center and the Martha and Nancy Lee Bivens Distinguished Professor for Children and Reading at Appalachian State University. Her scholarship focuses on diversity in youth literature and arts-based care in higher education. She is chair of the 2026 Randolph Caldecott Award Selection Committee, has served on a variety of award juries, and currently serves as a committee member for the United States Board on Books for Young People’s Outstanding International Books list. She is also past president of the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE (ALAN).

What To Expect

Join us online for a casual coffee shop chat. Brew your favorite cuppa and get comfy while Jewel shares an overview of her time as Chair, including examples of how the criteria is used in practice, what makes titles rise to a level of distinction, and how committee discussions move from preference language to criteria-based evaluation.
