Theatre Camp for Writers

Author Chris Tebbetts brings his energizing Theatre Camp for Writers to the Carolinas in three key parts:

Submit your scene(s)!

Friday, Sept 11th - for attendees of the Intensive: Theatre Camp for Writers

Participants are strongly encouraged (but not required) to submit scenes/excerpts from a work in progress to be “rehearsed” as if for performance, using volunteer actors from the class to take parts, read a few of these scenes, and offer constructive, interactive feedback to the authors in real time. Submitted scenes should have a focus on dialogue, action, and/or interaction between your characters. During the workshop, we will use these scenes to illustrate specific craft points with an emphasis on what’s working well.

  • Submit a scene from your work in progress, 500-1000 words or a whole picture book. Scenes will be read online during the 9/13 Prep event. Scenes will also be put on their feet during the 9/18 Intensive.
  • You may submit one scene for both events OR two separate scenes. Please indicate which scene is for which session.
  • Deadline to submit: Friday, Sept 11th

Once registered for the Intensive: Theatre Camp for Writers, submission instructions will appear in the MY EVENTS tab of your Member Home.

Join the online prep session!

Sunday, Sept 13th 6 pm - 7:30 pm - for attendees of the Intensive: Theatre Camp for Writers

This event is encouraged but not required for attendees of the half-day intensive. In this preparatory session for Theater Camp, our focus will be scene readings from participant submissions and discussion in the general Theater Camp context: How does this lens help us workshop the writing?

Once registered for the Intensive: Theatre Camp for Writers, the Zoom link to attend this prep session will appear in the MY EVENTS tab of your Member Home.

Intensive: Theatre Camp for Writers

Friday, Sept 18th 1 pm - 5 pm - on campus at AB Tech

What do acting, directing, and improv have to teach us as fiction writers? If you’re bringing characters to life on the page—that’s Acting. If you’re imagining a story in progress—angles, visuals, action, zooming in to details, zooming out to views—that’s Directing. If you’re developing ideas and first-drafting—that’s Improvisation.

Whether you’re noodling on new ideas, have a manuscript or story in progress, or just want to have some fun looking at writing in a new way, join us for this one-day, highly interactive workshop focused on practical, take-away tools you can use in your own writing practice.

Please note that this workshop is introvert- and extrovert-friendly. While we will be reading aloud and moving around, no actual performance is required!
