In this one-hour workshop, award-winning author Stephanie Gibeault will dig deeper into nonfiction book proposals. Stephanie has taught several courses for the Boyds Mills (formerly Highlights Foundation) and has sold three books on book proposals. This workshop is part of the SCBWI Canada East Digging Deeper workshop series. Read below for more details.
Middle grade or YA nonfiction is sold on proposal rather than a finished manuscript. But preparing a book proposal that will hook an editor or agent is a skill onto itself. The proposal is a sales document, job application, and a giant pitch. This workshop will cover all the sections that make up a book proposal as well as provide tips and tricks to make the proposal irresistible.
Stephanie Gibeault is an award-winning author of middle grade nonfiction and picture books. Some of her books include MAKING SENSE OF DOG SENSES; CALCULATING CHIMPANZEES, BRAINY BEES AND OTHER ANIMALS WITH MIND-BLOWING MATHEMATICAL ABILITIES; DOGS VS. HUMANS; and THE DOG WHO SAVED THE BEES. As a former biologist with a master’s degree in animal behavior and a certified professional dog trainer, Stephanie has been swarmed by monkeys, grumbled at by gorillas, and covered by fur and drool. Her books have been honoured with a Forest of Reading Silver Birch Express nomination, Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selections, a Mathical Honor, and a California Reading Association Eureka! Honor. In addition to teaching for Boyds Mills, she has taught for The Writers' Loft and will be teaching for The Writing Barn in February. Stephanie lives just outside of Toronto where she’s always on the lookout for fascinating facts to share with kids.
