Nanette McGuinness reveals aspects of the art and craft of translating children's books.

SCBWI Japan is happy to welcome Nanette McGuinness to discuss the nuts and bolts of being a translator. With over 130 published translations, Nanette is the award-winning translator of the much-loved Geronimo Stilton Graphic Novels, the newest release in the Asterix series coming out this fall and its spin-off series for young readers, Dogmatix

Nanette will cover aspects of becoming a children's book translator, pitching translations to publishers, the art and craft of translating books for young readers, and thoughts from those in the trade about the current market for international books.

This talk will appeal to translators and prospective translators as well as authors and author-illustrators who may wonder what goes into translating their original works.

Bio

Opera singer, translator, voice talent, and writer Nanette McGuinness is the translator of over 130 books and graphic novels for children and adults. Her translations have been nominated for the Eisner Awards and have won the Harvey Awards, among others. With eight recordings to her credit and her next album coming out in 2026, Nanette also performs with her award- winning contemporary chamber music group, Ensemble for These Times, does voice overs, has written or edited copy for games and apps and somehow finds time to do interviews, write articles and reviews, and give presentations about her work.
