MONTHLY MEETING: BookPeople Texas Book Festival Preview

Nov 02, 2024

603 N. Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78703

Although we are meeting in person, we will also provide a Zoom link to those who Register

The Texas Book Festival is happening so late this year, that we find we just cannot wait for it to arrive!

So in conjunction with BookPeople, we've put together a small panel of authors and illustrators that will be speaking at this year's TBF to tell us about their books and writing journeys.

Evan Griffith — Evan Griffith is the author of the middle-grade novels Manatee Summer and The Strange Wonders of Roots (both Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selections) and the picture book biographies Secrets of the Sea: The Story of Jeanne Power, Revolutionary Marine Scientist and Wild at Heart: The Story of Olaus and Mardy Murie, Defenders of Nature. His books have received multiple starred reviews and been recognized as Bank Street’s Best Children’s Books of the Year, National Science Teachers Association Best Stem Books, and Chicago Public Library’s Best Informational Books for Younger Readers. Evan received his MFA in Writing for Children at the Vermont College of Fine Arts where he now serves as faculty. He lives in Austin, Texas with a mischievous tuxedo cat and several overflowing bookshelves.

Eliza Kinkz — Eliza Kinkz is a Tejana illustrator whose debut picture book was Goldie’s Guide to Grandchilding; she has worked on TV shows, music videos, and most happily on her own award-winning animated films — and is the illustrator of the Pura Belpre Honor book, Papá’s Magical Water-Jug Clock and the just published companion volume Mamá’s Magnificent Dancing Plantitas. She lives with her family in Austin, TX.

Kari Lavelle — Kari Lavelle is the author of Butt or Face? Volume 1 (Sourcebooks, 2023), We Move the World (HarperCollins, 2021) as well as the forthcoming An Ode to Grapefruit – a picture book biography of James Earl Jones (Knopf, 2024). She is a member of SCBWI and 12×12 and enjoys taking classes at the Writing Barn.

Come join us for this little sneak peek to meet and celebrate some of our local authors participating in this year's festival!

After the panel, we're also going to tour BookPeople's kids section and talk about the best books to be looking at for inspiration in your own writing.

The meeting starts at 10am. However, if you can not make it in person due to distance or health, we will do our best to stream it live on Zoom. Please register to get the zoom link in your My Events section of your SCBWI account. This meeting is open (and free!) to both paid Members and Registered Users. If you have questions during the presentation, please put them in the Zoom chat.

By registering and/or attending our event, you agree to abide by the SCBWI Anti-harassment policy.
