FAQs

What makes the retreat different from a conference?

Our retreat is distinct from a conference as it includes:

  • An intimate experience with fellow creatives and faculty members
  • Opportunities to build critique cohorts during your retreat stay
  • Ample collaborative time to work on whatever projects you want
  • Space to reconnect with people, nature, the 577 grounds/history, and most importantly your writing and art
  • Pre-retreat events, meals, retreat space, access to faculty members, two critiques with faculty members, and scheduled group gatherings.

How do I know if a retreat is for me?

If any of these statements resonate with you, then consider our Skipping Stones Retreat!

  • I need dedicated and uninterrupted time to create.
  • I love connecting with individuals who are able to help one another grow.
  • I want an affordable retreat experience with a strong relational foundation.
  • I enjoy learning about the creative history in Ohio (the 577 is packed with history).
  • I could use a little inspiration from others who have been in the industry.
  • I am looking to fall back in love with writing and/or illustrating.
  • I want to realign my long-term and short-term creative goals.
  • I find nature relaxing and a necessary component to the creative process.
  • I benefit from constructive critiques with faculty.
  • I hope to find long-term friendships.

How much downtime will there be?

  • 8-hours of working time throughout the weekend on the 577 grounds with the choice of working back at the hotel

What am I able to get critiqued by faculty?

  • Manuscripts: 10 pages double spaced, 1 inch margins, Times New Roman size 12 pt.
  • Illustration work and/or portfolio
  • Picture book dummies

How can I maximize my experience?

  • Attend all of our pre-retreat events - building community is necessary
  • Submit your manuscripts/illustrations/picture book dummy on time
  • Think about questions for your critiques - this is your time to ask!
  • Bring your comforting creative items with you (favorite tumbler, pen, notebook/sketchbook, laptop, etc.)

For illustrators submitting a portfolio to be reviewed:

  • Submit your website or a PDF of 10-15 images by the critique deadline. A physical portfolio is not needed on location at the retreat.
