Have you ever wondered what an agent or editor is thinking when they read that all-important first page or see your illustrations for the first time? Here is your chance to find out!
📖 The First Page sessions give participants the chance to share the first manuscript page (up to 450 words) of their picture book or novel in front of the room and get immediate feedback from two faculty members. See examples of formatting below.
🎨 Illustrators in the First Look session will show a few images from their illustrator gallery at scbwi.org to three faculty members and hear their first impressions. Or you can send your illustrations to our Illustrator Co-Coordinator Robin at [email protected].
There is no additional charge for this session. The first 10 people who sign up and submit their work by the deadline will be guaranteed a spot in each session to present to the faculty. The rest will be put on a waiting list in case there is a vacancy. You must submit your first manuscript page (see formatting below) to [email protected] or three images/gallery link to [email protected] by April 25, 2026. We will notify you at least a week before the conference if you are on the list to present. You may choose another breakout session to attend that day if you aren't on the list.
📌 You must select your desired First Page/Look workshop on the registration page.
⚠️This session is not for the faint of heart! It can be difficult to hear critiques of your work, especially in front of a crowd. Please do not choose this option while registering if you are uncomfortable reading in front of a crowd or have doubts your work will be ready to share.
Can I attend if I'm not presenting my work? Yes! Listening to someone else's critique is a great way to learn how to make your own work stronger.
