Poetic Prose Practice with Quartez Harris

Poetry is an experience in the possibilities of language. In this interactive writing workshop, award-winning author and poet Quartez Harris, will try to trick you into using poetry to visually craft your prose. He will refer to his published books as a way to demonstrate how you can weave poetic metaphor into your writing to go beyond straightforward description. 

Quartez Harris is a poet, teaching artist and bestselling author. He was named Ohio Poet of the Year for his poetry collection We Made it to School Alive, and his poetry has garnered numerous accolades. His picture book Go Tell It: How James Baldwin Became a Writer is a USA Today Bestseller and Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award Honor. He spent many years as a second-grade teacher in the Cleveland public school system. He currently holds a creative writing Artist-in-Residence at Cleveland School of Arts where he teaches poetry and fiction workshops. 

To prepare for this interactive writing workshop, please bring either paper and pen, tablet, or laptop.

SCBWI is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. SCBWI Regions are managed by unpaid volunteers. Region funds support programs that benefit SCBWI members.

As part of the event planning process, Regional Advisors must sign contracts with venues, speakers, critiquers, vendors, and others who will be providing services during a regional activity. Registration fees collected for an event must cover the cost of these contracts; therefore, refunds are the exception rather than the rule. In the rare case a refund is granted, it will always be less any credit card processing fees and any other processing expenses.

Requests to refund registration fees for in-person activities will be decided on a case-by-case basis, except for events that have specific refund policies. When an event has its own refund policy, it will be clearly stated on the event information page. By registering for an event, you acknowledge that you have read and accept the event’s refund policy. 

Because fees paid to professionals for manuscript critiques, portfolio reviews, intensive programming, mentorships, pitch evaluations, and other exclusive offerings are contracted in advance, these fees cannot be refunded.

Registration fees paid for webinars or virtual events cannot be refunded because they are always available as recordings for 30 days following the actual broadcast.
