Description: Join a Q&A session on E&I with editor Harold Underdown and author Madian Al Jazerah, moderated by Maha Addasi of the Mid-Atlantic SCBWI.


Harold Underdown is a children's book editor, now working at Kane Press as Executive Editor after a mini-career as a consulting or independent editor, writing and revision teacher, and workshop/retreat and online class presenter. He speaks at conferences and gives many workshops. Previously, he was Vice President and Editorial Director at ipicturebooks. Before that, he was editorial director of the Charlesbridge trade program and has also worked at Orchard Books and Macmillan. Harold is the author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Children's Books, now in its third edition. He is a frequent speaker at writer’s conferences, training new writers on the ins and outs of the children’s book market, and maintains The Purple Crayon (www.underdown.org), a website on children’s publishing. Currently, he is an editorial consultant in New York.


Madian Al Jazerah is a Palestinian Jordanian who was born in Kuwait. He is the author of the book Are You This, or Are You This?: A Story of Identity and Worth, by Hurst Press, partnered with Oxford University Press. In 1997 he opened Amman’s Books@cafe, the first internet cafe/bookstore in the Arab world. Since its founding, he has been engaged in human rights work and LGBTQI activism. Madian continues to guest lecture at various universities in the United States and Europe and is a consultant for the United Nations on issues of LGBTQI rights.
