Ready to hone your character design and visual storytelling and get a feel for what it’s like to work with an art director? Join us for an illustrators’ intensive with Jim Hoover, Penguin Random House Art Director.
Based on Jim’s assignment, you will develop initial sketches for his review, then apply his feedback to prepare your final pieces to share during the Zoom intensive on November 11.
Jim Hoover
Jim Hoover is an Art Director at Viking Children’s Books. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design in Illustration, Jim has been in publishing now for over twenty years. He speaks regularly at SCBWI and has designed and art directed hundreds of books ranging from picture books and nonfiction to middle grade. Some of those titles include James Yang's Geisel-Award-Winning Stop! Bot, Max Brallier’s #1 New York Times best-selling series The Last Kids On Earth, and Amanda Gorman's #1 New York Times Change Sings. Jim lives in New York City with his wife and son.

SCBWI-Nebraska Illustrator Coordinator Dianna Carda will send you the assignment details and instructions on August 15. Final art will be due to Dianna on November 10. See below for additional due dates.

Preliminary sketches DUE – Thurs, Sept 14
Jim’s feedback sent to participants – Sat, Oct 15
Final full-color art DUE – Friday, Nov 10

Intensive – Live critique of all completed assignments with Jim and peers 9:45 am – 12:45 pm
