F.A.Q.

Who should attend this conference?

This conference is designed for children’s book authors, illustrators, and author-illustrators at all stages, from pre-published to traditionally published and experienced professionals.

What genres and age ranges will be covered?

Sessions will focus on picture books, middle grade, and young adult literature, including fiction and nonfiction.

Is the conference appropriate for beginners?

Yes. Programming is designed to support a range of experience levels. Session descriptions will help guide creators to sessions most beneficial to them.

Will there be an opportunity for portfolio critiques?

Yes. The conference features a juried portfolio showcase. Illustrators who are participating in the showcase may sign up for a written critique of their work. The critiques will focus on the clarity of artistic voice, cohesiveness of style, technical execution, character consistency, narrative storytelling, and overall market readiness of the work.

Will there be an opportunity for manuscript critiques?

Yes. Conference attendees may choose to receive a written critique of their work by a participating editor or agent. Critiques will focus on opening hooks, voice and tone, character introduction, plot momentum, clarity and pacing, page turns for picture books, language, and craft. Written critiques will be sent to participating authors shortly after the conference.

Can I pitch my work to agents or editors?

No. This is an educational conference. While there may be opportunities to meet industry professionals, this is not the place to pitch your work. Some participating agents and editors will be open to submissions from conference attendees following our event.

Will sessions be recorded?

This conference is a live, in-person experience and sessions will not be recorded. While SCBWI Western Washington offers many virtual and recorded programs throughout the year, this one-day event is designed to be enjoyed live.

What should I bring?

Bring a notebook or sketchbook, pens/pencils, and business cards. Some breakout sessions ask that you bring along a project you’re working on. Planning to purchase some books? You may want to bring along a tote bag or backpack. A refillable water bottle is also recommended.

Is lunch provided?

Yes. Your registration fee includes a boxed lunch.

Is the venue accessible?

Yes. The venue is ADA accessible. If you have specific access needs, please contact the conference organizers in advance.

Are scholarships available?

Yes. The SCBWI WWA region has limited scholarships we can offer for events.

Scholarships are awarded based on financial need and our budget. We will consider all scholarship requests but cannot guarantee all requests will be fulfilled. Scholarship recipients may be asked to volunteer and help out at the event for which they were awarded the scholarship. The scholarship application deadline for the SCBWI WWA Conference is Saturday, February 28, at 5 p.m. PST. For more information or to apply, click on the SCHOLARSHIP tab on the Conference homepage.

What is the cancellation or refund policy?

As part of SCBWI WWA event planning process, conference organizers must sign contracts with venues, speakers, and others who will be providing services during our event. Registration fees collected for the conference must cover the cost of these contracts; therefore, refunds must be the exception rather than the rule. If you would like to request a refund, email [email protected]. Please understand that all refunds are subject to a $30 cancellation fee and a $5 processing fee. No refunds will be issued after midnight March 20, 2026. Conference registration is nontransferable. There are no refunds for manuscript critiques, portfolio showcase, portfolio critiques, or any other add-ons.
