The Rat in the Woodpile – A Poetry Workshop

Apr 05, 2025

Online event

The best poetry takes us by surprise. It exposes little hidden things we hadn’t expected but that we maybe knew were there all along. In this one-hour workshop, we’ll celebrate small things. We’ll goof around with language. We’ll search for surprises. (We might even find time to look at opportunities in the children’s poetry market.) Most of all, we’ll celebrate the discovery of our own authentic poetic voices.

Eric Ode (whose last name should be pronounced like the poem but is actually pronounced OH-dee) is a widely-published children’s picture book author and award-winning children’s poet. His poetry has appeared in over three-dozen anthologies, numerous children’s magazines, and in curricular materials around the world. Ode provides dozens of author visits each year to schools throughout the country. He lives in Port Townsend, WA with his lovely wife and their lazy but ridiculously affectionate cat.
