The Houston, San Antonio, and Austin regions are teaming up for a joint Urban Sketching Day field trip!
Join fellow Texas SCBWI members in historic Columbus, Texas, on October 3, 2026, for a day of sketching, learning, and exploring. Spend the day capturing the charm of this small Texas town while connecting with fellow illustrators and creatives. Enjoy coffee and lunch at local cafés, hear inspiring talks from published SCBWI members Laura Fisk, Christopher Jennings, and Lisa Chow at the Live Oaks Art Center, and participate in a fun sketching scavenger hunt featuring points of interest throughout town.
Whether you work in pencil, watercolor, digital media, or oils, this event is a great opportunity to practice your plein air and urban sketching skills. Bring your sketchbook, favorite art supplies, and creative spirit!

Arrival and morning coffee at Lucy’s Wine & Coffee Bar

Artist talks by Lisa Chow, Laura Fisk, and Christopher Jennings at Live Oaks Art Center
12:00–1:30 PM
Sketching, exploring, and scavenger hunt activities around town
1:30–2:30 PM
Lunch at a local café or brewery
2:30–3:00 PM
Group photo and sketch share
Afterward, attendees are welcome to continue sketching and exploring at their own pace.
What to Bring
* Sketchbooks and art supplies (pencils, pens, markers, watercolors, iPads, etc.)
* Easels, portable stools, lawn chairs, or lap desks if desired
* Water bottle
* Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
* Bug spray
* Light jacket or layers (Texas weather can be unpredictable)
* Snacks or beverages, if desired
Accessibility & Walking
Columbus has a compact downtown area, and activities will take place within approximately four city blocks. There will be some walking, but distances are minimal and the event is designed to be accessible to most participants.
Transportation
Attendees are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from Columbus. We encourage members to coordinate carpools with others from their region if interested. Additional details and opportunities to connect with fellow attendees may be shared prior to the event.
