Wrangling and Writing The "High Concept" Pitch with Author Kit Rosewater

This event is FREE and IN-PERSON ONLY, must be 18+ to attend. This event is NOT recorded and NOT live streamed.

“High concept” might be the most rage-inducing phrase writers hear while querying agents or putting their work on submission with editors. It might also be the most misunderstood phrase in the publishing industry today. This workshop, led by MG and YA author Kit Rosewater, includes a discussion on stakes, tropes, genre, and setting—all crucial elements in determining how to flip a pitch from quiet to high concept. Bring your latest project, in whatever stage of development, to the table as we work on creating a query or submission letter that will make agents and editors sit up and take notice.

Kit Rosewater lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her partner and two small children who are bent on destroying the universe. She is the author of Books 1-3 in The Derby Daredevils, an illustrated middle grade series out through Abrams. Her debut YA romcom, All's Fair in Love and Field Hockey, comes out May 6, 2025 through Delacorte Romance. Kit has been a high school theater and English teacher, a bookseller at Austin's very own BookPeople, a Children’s Literature academic, and a creative writing instructor for adults. Catch her online at kitrosewater.com and @savethekitrosewater.
