In retrospect, Hélène Desputeaux has simply always worked for children. Her aim has always been to make them dream. Since 1983, she has offered them over 100 books, each of which is like a kiss sent out from her colourful little world. A world that has since travelled around the globe several times to meet children from everywhere. And among the swarm of endearing characters she has created, there is a now-famous little baby named Caillou. Hélène Desputeaux is the creator of all these images of Caillou, under a variety of forms, no matter how far they have travelled… often beyond her control! Hélène Desputeaux’s work has received several awards and recognition. The most recent was presented to her by the Université du Québec à Montréal in April 2009: the 2009 UQÀM Recognition Award, from the Faculty of Education, which was awarded "for her creativity, her pedagogical qualities and her love of children". This prize coincided, almost day to day, with the 20th anniversary of Caillou’s creation… in April 1989! The true Caillou (the one that belongs to the colourful world of Hélène Desputeaux) is now over 30 years-old, and his real home is, well… desputeaux + aubin! Hélène Desputeaux holds a bachelor’s degree in visual arts (BFA) (Université Laval, 1981) and a bachelor’s degree in education (B.Ed.) (Université du Québec à Montréal, 1984). She also completed the first year of a master’s degree in Educational Sciences, early childhood and elementary education (Université du Québec à Montréal, 1985). On top of it all, Hélène Desputeaux has a remarkable musical background. She has won several grants and awards at the Canadian Music Competition (piano), between 1969 and 1972.
