Louisa is grieving her cherished grandfather’s death and stumbling through a series of demeaning  jobs when she finds the perfect position–a live-in secretary to an elderly author, Marguerite Roberts. Louisa’s Native American heritage teaches respect of elders, and she is puzzled and upset that the wheelchair-bound Marguerite is shunned by her family and trapped on the second floor. But Louisa quickly realizes there is much more to the job than she expected. Something in the Roberts’ house is not quite right, and Louisa begins to fear for Marguerite’s life–and her own.

When 15-year-old Alison's grandfather hints their family was involved in the
fiery deaths of a woman and her daughter 50 years ago, her grandmother acts
like it's his Alzheimer's talking. Alison digs deeper and learns that her grandmother was accused of
starting the fatal blaze. She is determined to find out the real cause of the fire and
clear her grandmother's name. But she's running out of time--the house where the family died will be torn down in two weeks. And the more clues she uncovers, the closer she gets to unmasking a killer who will stop at nothing to keep old secrets.

But Sam gives her the acceptance she needs, and he becomes Wendy’s refuge—until she discovers he has been keeping a dangerous secret. When trouble strikes, Sam lashes out at Wendy, and his reckless fury causes a tragedy for which Wendy feels responsible. Is the family she rejected the only thing that can save her?
