About

Award-winning author Tanya Lee Stone writes for kids and teens. Some of her books include nonfiction for older readers PEACE IS A CHAIN REACTION, GIRL RISING, COURAGE HAS NO COLOR, ALMOST ASTRONAUTS, THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE BARBIE, picture books WHO SAYS WOMEN CAN'T BE DOCTORS?!, THE HOUSE THAT JANE BUILT, ELIZABETH LEADS THE WAY and SANDY'S CIRCUS: A STORY ABOUT ALEXANDER CALDER, and the Young Adult novel A BAD BOY CAN BE GOOD FOR A GIRL (on ALA's Top 100 Banned Books of the Decade). Stone is known for telling overlooked histories about extraordinary people who have helped shape our world, as well as topics and ideas that empower girls and women. Forthcoming titles include picture book REMEMBERING ROSALIND (about Rosalind Franklin). Stone's work has received many honors and awards, including the Robert F. Sibert Medal, NAACP Image Award, Bank Street's Flora Steiglitz Straus Award, SCBWI's Golden Kite Award, YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction finalist, Jane Addams Award Honor, Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor, NCTE Orbis Pictus Honor, Syndey Taylor Notable, Junior Library Guild, ALA Notables, ALA Quick Picks, CBC Notable Social Studies Books, Kirkus Best Books, SLJ Best Books, New York Public Library Books for the Teen Age, Texas Tayshas, Kansas State Reading Circle, Minnesota Comstock Award Honor, Vermont Red Clover Honor, Kentucky Bluegrass Award Finalist, IRA Young Adult Choice, Booklist Top Ten Youth Biography, Washington Post Best Kids Books, and Amelia Bloomer Award. She is available for school visits and conferences. Stone received an English degree from Oberlin College, then went on to earn a Masters in Science Education, and a PhD in Creative Writing. Dr. Stone teaches is a professor and the Program Director of the Professional Writing Program at Champlain College and has written for VOYA, Horn Book, School Library Journal, and the New York Times.
