Congratulations to Desira B. Stewart and Yumiko Kamie, this year's winners of the Emerging Voices Award.

Announcing Our 2024 Emerging Voices Winners

Established in 2012 with funding from Martin and Sue Schmitt of the 455 Foundation, the Emerging Voices Award was created to foster the emergence of diverse and underrepresented voices in children’s books. Desira B. Stewart won for the picture book manuscript "My Hair Belongs Everywhere: A Celebration of the CROWN Act". She describes her book as "a celebration of Black hair and a declaration that Black hair belongs everywhere" with nods to the natural styles of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Ava Duvernay, Amanda Gorman, and other Black icons. Yumiko Kamie won for "Ichi's List", a young adult manuscript set in Kazusa, Japan in the year 1235. The novel opens with a thrilling heist as a young thief grapples with class inequality and the responsibility of raising a young sibling alone.Desira and Yumiko will each receive free tuition to the SCBWI Virtual Conference and a special chance to have their manuscripts reviewed by a list of hand-picked agents and editors.Thank you to all of our wonderful applicants this year!
