Announcing the 2023 Spark Award Winners

The Spark Awards are given annually and recognize excellence in children's books published through an independent or non-traditional publishing route. The winners for 2023, Carolyn Armstrong and Joey Benun, were chosen from a pool of hundreds of entries.

In the Novel Category: AT THE EDGE OF THE ICE by Carolyn Armstrong

The first part of the Eco Warriors series, this middle grade novel follows an eleven-year-old girl with a magical gift as she tries to save the ecosystem of a Norwegian archipelago. 

In the Picture Book Category: PEBBLES AND THE BIGGEST NUMBER by Joey Benun, illustrated by Laura Watson

Join Pebbles the Butterfly on a mathematical adventure as he searches for the biggest number in existence. 

The winners will each receive a $1,000 cash prize, along with free tuition upcoming virtual conferences, and the chance to teach a workshop about their road to publication. AT THE EDGE OF THE ICE and PEBBLES AND THE BIGGEST NUMBER will also feature as book-of-the-month picks in the SCBWI Book Club on Instagram.
