Digging Deep: Researching Your Nonfiction or Historical Fiction Project
Do you have an idea for a nonfiction or historical fiction project and don’t know where to begin? Do you feel overwhelmed by how to research or how to organize it? This intensive will walk you through the research process, give you ideas for where and how to research, and allow you to delve into some of your own research. Participants will need to have an idea (or ideas) for a project, a laptop, and a willingness to dig into research. Open to picture book writers or novelists.

Marcie Flinchum Atkins is a teacher-librarian by day and a children’s book writer in the wee hours of the morning. She holds an M.A. and M.F.A. in Children’s Literature from Hollins University. She is the author of Ancient China (ABDO, 2015), “Rookie Get Ready to Code” series (Scholastic Children’s Press, 2019), and Wait, Rest, Pause: Dormancy in Nature (Millbrook Press, 2019) which was one of Kirkus’ Best Picture Books of the Year. Marcie’s poetry has been featured in Things We Feel and What is a Friend? edited by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong (Pomelo Books, 2022) and “The Dirigible Balloon.” She has a forthcoming historical fiction verse novel coming in 2024 (Versify) and a nonfiction picture book coming in 2025 (Chronicle). www.marcieatkins.com
