1.      Welcome the newest addition to our regional team as ARA: Nicole Green. Nicole has been a key volunteer in our region for many years, first as a meet-up coordinator for an area of our region, and then PAL coordinator in 2020. Since then, Nicole has become a trusted part of the Mid-Atlantic team and created a stronger community for our PAL members. We are thrilled to work with her as ARA. Welcome to the team, Nicole! 2.      We’re happy to introduce you to our new program: <a href="https://www.scbwi.org/regions/midatlantic/beltways-and-bridges">Beltways and Bridges: A Kid Lit Road Trip</a>. Come along with us on this year-long journey to help members create confidence in their work, build community within the region, and reach their writing, illustrating, and publishing goals. The first two events – in-person fall craft intensives in Reston, VA and Charlottesville, VA – are now open for registration. Expect a day of craft and camaraderie that includes a lunch social with faculty. Intensive are small-group deep dives into craft topics and are limited to 30 participants each so <a href="https://www.scbwi.org/regions/midatlantic/beltways-and-bridges">sign up</a> early to claim a spot!Events and Activities Coming Up: 1.      Have you signed up for the <a href="https://www.scbwi.org/events/summer-conference-2023">SCBWI Virtual Summer Conference</a> hosted by headquarters? Sign up ASAP for access to all of their keynotes, panels, and 35 breakout sessions. If you can’t watch live, you can watch the recordings for up to one month. Don’t miss the Debut Author Panel on Aug 5 at 12:30 Eastern which features our own Mid-Atlantic E&amp;I co-chair, Hanh Bui! 2.      Published Members: SCBWI Mid-Atlantic is presenting at two local library conferences this fall. Participating authors and illustrators will have the opportunity to share information about the programs they offer for schools and libraries. Space is full for picture book authors and illustrators, but we still have a few spots available for members who create for kids 12+. Reply to this email ASAP for the full information sheet with dates and fees.  3.      Sign up for our Aug 15 webinar, Starting with Heart: Centering Your Writing on an Emotional Response with author Lisa Rogers. Lisa will talk about starting with a deeply-felt emotion and how to keep that emotion top of mind during the entire writing process. Fall is coming and school is nearly back in session. Let's teach each other some of our best social media management tricks. What is worth it? What actually translates to book sales and reviews? How do you use your time to get the best rate of return? Register <a href="https://www.scbwi.org/events/back-to-school-self-and-indie-publishing-social">here</a>. 5.      Registration is open for our September webinar, Plot, Page-Turns, and Pith: All About Picture Book Pacing with editor Sylvie Frank. In this session, we’ll take a deep dive into a mentor text, examining character, plot, design, and all the other elements that make up a well-paced book. Katie Gigliotti is excited to announce the release of her second book, YOU ARE: FINDING GOD IN THE LITTLE THINGS, which came out on June 30th. Dan Bailes just received a 5 Star Reader’s Favorite Review for his newest book, illustrated by Melissa Gardner: ‘With fabulous illustrations that perfectly complement the story's sentiment and beautiful adventures, MARLON AND THE WIDE WORLD will appeal to cat and raccoon lovers of all ages.’ Elaine Hilowitz is celebrating the release of her picture book, ORRIN HELPS, and Judy Tabler’s picture book, RATS IN THE WHITE HOUSE, was selected by the Dog Writers Association of America as best early reader (ages 4-9) and also received the Dogwise Award for Best Book (adult or juvenile, nonfiction or fiction) published between 2020-2022. Irene Vinyard Bennett’s historical novel, BATTLE OF THE ARTISANS: MAKING THE BELLS OF MARQUIS YI, is a finalist for the 2022 International Proverse Prize and will be published by Proverse Publishing of Hong Kong in November. Tyler Charlton debut author-illustrator picture book THE WAVE was just published by Roaring Brook Press (Macmillan) and is in stores August 1st.We love all this good news!
