July Mid-Atlantic Update

Member Opportunities:1.      We need proposals! We have a lot of exciting programming coming up and we need speakers. If you have an idea for a talk, intensive, webinar, or panel – submit it <a href="https://forms.gle/4xsmcmvCGyUZzzXx8">here</a>! We are especially looking for 3-hr craft intensives for the fall. These classes allow for a deep-dive into craft and usually include time for attendees to do exercises, share their work, and even receive feedback. Reply to this email with questions.   2.    Arlington, VA public libraries has put out a call for entries for their first Local Author Fair. Eligible authors include those living in the <a href="https://library.arlingtonva.us/services/accounts-and-borrowing/get-a-free-library-card/">DC Metro service area</a> who have an Arlington Public Library card. Participating authors and illustrators will have the opportunity to share information about the programs they offer for schools and libraries. Space is limited. Participants will be selected by lottery in August. Reply to this email for the full information sheet with dates and fees and how to sign up for the lottery.   Events and Activities Coming Up: 1.      Time is running out to sign up for our Summer Peer Critique Event to be held virtually July 26th, led by our hard-working Critique Coordinator Terry Jennings. Our critique events are safe spaces where we can learn about the strengths and weaknesses of our work, and, possibly, form critique groups that will last well beyond that day. Lisa will talk about starting with a deeply-felt emotion and how to keep that emotion top of mind during the entire writing process. In this session, we’ll take a deep dive into a mentor text, examining character, plot, design, and all the other elements that make up a well-paced book. Good news:Posting good news on the website has been on hiatus as we transition to the new site. Pamela Harris is celebrating the release of her second book, THIS TOWN IS ON FIRE, which came out on June 20th. You may remember that last year Pamela’s debut novel, WHEN YOU LOOK LIKE US, won the Golden Kite Award for YA fiction. This year, we’re thrilled to celebrate the news that our member, Laura K Zimmermann won the Crystal Kite Award for her picture book, MUSHROOM RAIN, illustrated by Jamie Green, for the Atlantic region.
