Two SCBWI South Africa Illustrators feature in the shortlist for the Tinie Holloway Gold Medal, one of the South African Academy’s Literary Prizes

These prestigious prizes serve to recognise and act as an incentive for Afrikaans writers to produce quality work in their mother tongue.

For the first time ever, the shortlists of the South Academy of Science and Art literary prizes have been announced in advance. We are delighted to announce that two of our SCBWI South Africa Illustrator members are on the shortlist of five titles for the Tienie Holloway Gold Medal for Children’s Literature!

 

Elsabé Ebersöhn features twice. An amazing achievement.

Our Illustrator Coordinator, Emily House, is also on the shortlist.

 

The full shortlist for the Tienie Holloway Medal for Children’s Literature:

 

  • Daar’s ’n towerponie in my bed (There’s a magic pony in my bed) by Martelize Faber (Illustrations: Elsabé Ebersöhn) (LAPA)
  • Die hond met die stert sonder swaai (The Dog with the Broken Wag) by Paula Fourie (Illustrations: Emily House) (Tafelberg)
  • Vetplantfeetjies by Antjie Krog and Ingrid de Kok (Illustrations: Fiona Moodie) (Penguin Random House SA)
  • Saartjie, die spinnekop met sewe bene (Saartjie, the spider with seven legs) by Riana Scheepers (Illustrations: Elsabé Ebersöhn) (LAPA)
  • Net nie ’n hond nie! (Not Just a Dog) by Jaco Jacobs (Illustrations: Patrick Latimer) (Pan Macmillan)

 

The winners of the Tinie Holloway Gold Medal will be announced on Friday 19 April 2024.

 

Joan Rankin a long-time SCBWI member won this prestigious gold medal in 2012.
