WRITING FROM THE INSIDE OUT - CHAPTER BOOKS WORKSHOP - Calling all aspiring chapter book writers! Want to learn how to write chapter books but not sure where to start? Have ideas but unsure how to properly execute them? Need some guidance and accountability? Join renowned chapter book expert Marcie Colleen in this 8-month virtual workshop, and learn how to captivate readers ages 6-10. Offered by the SCBWI Nebraska region starting September 2025.
We’re kicking off 2026 with our sixth annual Indi-500 (word) Challenge! Once again, we have TWO contests: one for writers and one for illustrators. This is an SCBWI Nebraska members-only race to the finish and is restricted to premium members of the Nebraska region of SCBWI. Based on selected themes and prompts, contestants create a 500-word story or spot illustration in just 48 hours starting January 30.
Writers and illustrators! Join us for some casual in-person writing and illustrating. Gather for a few hours and focus on your current work in progress in the company of like-minded creators. Next event: Friday, February 20, from 10:00 am - 1:30 pm.
THE MIDDLE GRADE ADVENTURE BLUEPRINT - Join us as author, podcaster, and book coach Beth McMullen explores a practical, writer-friendly framework built around five core pillars that help middle grade adventure, fantasy, and mystery stories gain momentum and emotional depth. Using simple questions and craft touchstones you can apply while drafting and revising, we’ll look at why scenes stall, how kid-sized stakes and agency keep readers engaged, and how emotional change drives a story forward. Offered by SCBWI Nebraska as part of their Creative Connections series. Wednesday, February 25, from 7:00-8:00 pm (CST) on Zoom.
Put your boots on the trail, or more appropriately, pen to paper. Join us for an all-day in-person Book Camp with senior editor Anna Parsons from Simon & Schuster as she discusses the elements it takes to go From Pitch to Offer. All registered participants can submit a one-page pitch, query, or the first 250 words of a project for live, on-the-spot, feedback. (See event details for more information.) Saturday, March 7, 2026 in Omaha.
