10 Reasons Why a Critique Group is a Win for You

By Gayle Veitenheimer

  1. Hone Your Craft: If you’re a newbie, the fastest way to develop your craft is to join a critique group. As more experienced writers catch your mistakes, you’ll learn to identify common errors and eliminate them before your next meeting.
  2. Accountability: Deadlines give us all that needed push to work.
  3. Diversity: Your group will introduce you to different genres, writing styles, points of view, and so much more.
  4. Networking: You may have a hidden wealth of connections within your group.
  5. Support: Writing is a bumpy journey. No one gets us like our fellow writers/illustrators.
  6. Feedback: You’ll learn to receive criticism and how to filter what you keep from what you dismiss.
  7. Friendships: I have been part of numerous critique groups, and years later, I still keep in touch with many of them.
  8. Publishing: Not only do we gain craft insight, but we learn the business too. Marketing, agents, and more. Take advantage of this opportunity.
  9. Resources: Group members can offer suggestions for books on craft, marketing, etc.
  10. A Writing Retreat: One year my critique group put on our own retreat. Each brought a WIP and each taught on a particular topic. Inexpensive, fun, and so very helpful.

Still, you may need to try several on for size. Not every group is the right fit for that particular

season. Don’t get discouraged and don’t give up. Your perfect group is waiting for you.
