Lisa Johnston Hancock, Guest Speaker Sept. 12, 11:00AM

Lisa Johnston Hancock is a children's book author, illustrator and educator with more than 15 years of experience teaching both children and adults. Lisa holds a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the Savannah College of Art And Design and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Alabama, grounding her creative work in strong technical training across multiple visual art disciplines. Her book work thoughtfully integrates STEM-focused learning, blending science and art to create meaningful, hand on learning opportunities. Lisa's stories are inspired by personal experiences and center on social-emotional learning themes, offering relatable and thought-provoking content for young readers. When Lisa is not writing or illustrating, you can find her traveling with her family, hiking, stargazing, reading or playing bass guitar.

Come join other illustrators for art critiques and discussions on industry topics. All experience levels welcome!

Typically we meet the second Saturday of the month. (No meeting in July due to SCBWI's national summer conference).

Guest Speaker: Lisa Johnston Hancock

Topic: How To Create A Stylized Character from Realistic Sketches

Lisa will discuss what the debut process has been like, her workflow and how she creates consistent stylized animals, like Great Bear, from realistic studies. She will then share a demo in either procreate or watercolor/mixed media. Attendees can also create their own work, if time is allowed.

WHAT WE DO:

  • Exchange Ideas And Mingle:  Meetups are the best place to get to know one another! Come hang out. 
  • Illustration prompts: Prompts will be announced  a month before the meeting. Then we will critique each other’s illustration during the meeting. The goal is to develop your portfolio. 
  • Portfolio Hot Seats: Illustrators can submit their portfolio to be reviewed by the group. You can ask once a year. 
  • Guest Speakers: We occasionally have guest speakers!
  • 15 Minutes Topic of the Month: We pick a topic every month such as agents, self promotion etc. Ask anything, share anything!
