Jim Hoover is a Senior Art Director at Viking Children’s Books. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design in Illustration, Jim has been in publishing now for over twenty-five years. He speaks regularly at SCBWI and has designed and art directed hundreds of books ranging from picture books, nonfiction, to middle grade including James Yang's opus, Isamu and the Geisel Award Winning Stop! Bot!, Max Brallier’s New York Times best-selling series The Last Kids On Earth, and the upcoming graphic novel for the famous orphan in Paris, Madeline by John Bemelmans Marciano, LeUyen Pham, and Alex Puvilland. Jim lives in New York City with his wife and son.

Typically we meet the second Saturday of the month. (No meeting in July due to SCBWI's national summer conference).

Topic: Portfolio Reviews and Talking Shop
Jim Hoover, Senior Art Director at Viking and Philomel Children’s Books, discusses his career, where he sees the industry is at currently, and most importantly—to look at portfolios. Come prepared with three to five pieces to show and be ready to critique one or two as a full group. The hour will zip by—come join our lively discussion. Jim is a twenty-seven-year industry veteran who works primarily on middle grade, graphic novels, and his personal favorite, picture books.

WHAT WE DO:
- Exchange Ideas And Mingle: Meetups are the best place to get to know one another! Come hang out.
- Illustration prompts: Prompts will be announced a month before the meeting. Then we will critique each other’s illustration during the meeting. The goal is to develop your portfolio.
- Portfolio Hot Seats: Illustrators can submit their portfolio to be reviewed by the group. You can ask once a year.
- Guest Speakers: We occasionally have guest speakers!
- 15 Minutes Topic of the Month: We pick a topic every month such as agents, self promotion etc. Ask anything, share anything!
