SCBWI South Africa supports South African children's book writers, illustrators and translators working in all children's literature genres including board books, picture books, chapter books, educational publishing and young adult books.

We are a thriving community of writers, illustrators and translators and we welcome anyone with a professional interest in children's publishing. We hold meetings in Cape Town and Gauteng as well as hosting regular online meetings to allow members from across the country to participate. Meetings include critique sessions, illustrating and writing workshops, opportunities to develop your craft and presentations by editors of publishing houses and other experts from the publishing industry. Whether you're published or an aspiring writer or illustrator, our regular meetings and enthusiastic whatsapp groups provide the support and advice you are looking for in a warm and welcoming environment. If you have just signed up as a premium (paid) member and have South Africa as your home region, WELCOME! and please start here:
- Email our Regional Advisor (RA) - Emily House - at [email protected] to let her know that you have joined. She will then add you to the relevant communication channels and let our website administrator know to add you to our SCBWI South Africa Members page.
- Please also sign up to our quarterly newsletter using the subscribe form at the bottom of this page. (This newsletter is open to anyone who is interested, not just paying members.)
Featured Illustrator - Elsabe Ebersohn
Elsabe has illustrated several award winning Afrikaans children's books in just the past few years, including both picture books and chapter books. "I am inspired by children and all the books they find fascinating. Finding beauty in everything from winter leaves to blooming flowers keeps me occupied on trail runs – I always stop for pictures! Nature and all the fauna and flora inspire my realistic art while adding natural elements to the characters I create for children’s book illustrations."

To be eligible for our Featured Illustrator spot, please make sure you are a current, paid up, South Africa member and that your profile is filled out with your bio, website/contact info, and a good number of high quality portfolio pieces. You will be contacted by our website administrator if you have been selected for an upcoming feature.
