This month’s Breezer Making Waves is Lynn Street, author of THE BLUE JAYS THAT GREW A FOREST
Let’s dig into Lynn’s news!
Hi Lynn. What are we celebrating with you?
My debut nonfiction picture book THE BLUE JAYS THAT GREW A FOREST came out August 5, 2025 from Peachtree Publishing.
Congratulations! What does this opportunity mean to you?
I'm excited to get the word out about this nature story and share it with young readers. I'm happy to answer questions about all the research that went into it.
What do you feel led you to this place on your journey? If applicable, please share how your membership and participation in Southern Breeze helped you reach your goals.
I had a mentorship six years ago with Heather Montgomery for my nonfiction (through SCBWI Southern Breeze). I continued to cross paths with Heather at regional conferences and at Highlights nonfiction workshops and through other courses she taught. I'm still working on and submitting manuscripts that we worked on during that time. That mentorship gave me a leg up when it came to revising my work. I learned about breaking text down so that readers could understand each page spread.
Do you have any advice for Breezers who want to achieve something similar?
I recommend listening in on some of the many webinars offered by the different SCBWI regions and attending regional conferences. It's a great way to meet other writers (even if only virtually) and think about the type of books you want to write.
