Connecting with “Kids” of all Ages

From conference panels and presentations to small group and large group assemblies, Kathleen delights in sharing her love of reading and writing. She has organized and participated in the Rochester Children’s Book Festival for more than 20 years.

Kathleen Blasi crafts stories that feature quiet heroes. Milo’s Moonlight Mission lauds connecting with nature and one another, as a budding astronaut plots to create quality time with his busy mother—even if it takes heading outside in the middle of the night. Narrative non-fiction Two-by-Two: A World War II Friendship Story, releasing September 2026, is based on childhood allies who employ loyalty and acceptance—the perfect antidotes to anti-Japanese sentiment proliferated by the adults around them.

A passionate learner, Kathleen participates in conferences and workshops, including those sponsored by the SCBWI, Kindling Words, The Rutgers University Council on Children’s Literature, The Highlights Foundation, and Jane Yolen’s Picture Book Boot Camp.

Active in the children's writing community, Kathleen has served as Co-President of Rochester Area Children’s Writers & Illustrators and as former Co-Director of the Rochester Children's Book Festival, for which she and her Co-Director received a New York State Reading Association Literacy Advocate Award.

Kathleen lives in western New York, where, along with honing her writing craft, she enjoys fostering the curiosity of young storytellers, through author visits and writing workshops for elementary school students. She models her writing recipe, making it flexible and accessible to all, touting the one necessary ingredient: curiosity! If, on one of those visits, she plays some part in helping even one or two students to see themselves as writers, it’s been a great day.
