Engaging with children, writers, illustrators and artists

Michelle is reading to kindergarten students and speaking at the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University.

Michelle Marcotte has written and published non-fiction, fiction, poetry, worked as a flack for government and a columnist for national newspapers. She is a Canadian-American visual artist and writer. She has lived in Canada for 53 year and in the US for nearly 17 years; she has worked in over 40 countries as an international regulatory affairs consultant and science committee manager in the United Nations Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depleting Substances. She has a deeply informed perspective on world affairs.

Michelle Marcotte offers services to librarians and teachers of teens because although she writes books for all ages, she likes writing for teens and adults best.

Here is what she does: Michelle tells the students what she has published and reads a bit of those books, for example her most recent book ORPHANS EVADE THE AUTHORITIES. She asks if they write anything voluntarily, just because they like writing or MUST write to stop from going crazy or dying of boredom.

She explains what writers often say are “The rules of writing”. But Michelle says teens SHOULD write, because writing can be the one aspect at this stage of their lives when they can break the rules. Michelle tells them how.

She talks about overcoming the frustrations of writing. If the teens don’t volunteer to discuss much, she launches into workshop mode and gets them writing.

All this will take about 45-60 minutes. If two sessions are preferred, the second session will be a workshop with writing prompts for fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and journalism.
