Rowen MacCarald writes fiction and nonfiction that opens minds to new possibilities and perspectives using humor, facts, empathy, and an appreciation for magic—including both the magical wonders of the everyday as well as the wonders of fantasy.
Rowen has written over eighty books for schools and libraries on such topics as stories of immigration, space science, and animal behavior. Last year, Rowen’s first picture book came out: How Mom Met Mama. In it, a mother and daughter together create a fantastical bedtime story of the origin of their family, complete with a dragon, a troll, a unicorn, and some pirates. That same year, their nonfiction book Ghostwriters was a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection.
Rowen has a background in the biological sciences and has participated in field research from the forests of the northeast to the mountains of Hawaii and the rolling plains of North Dakota. After getting their master’s degree in ecology and natural resources, they worked on whale research at the Cornell Bird Lab (that’s not as weird as it sounds—birds communicate with sound, and so do whales) before moving on to write for the education market.
