Sue Heavenrich, Author

Developing programs for libraries and schools

Sue enjoys developing programs for libraries and schools that connect science and art. Her programs for K-12 include writing about nature (poetry and nonfiction), combining math and textile art, and publishing a “teen zine.”

Sue Heavenrich is an award-winning, multi-published author whose books and articles invite children to explore the world outside their door. Her picture books have received several awards including Junior Library Guild and NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book, and The Pie that Molly Grew was selected by New York as the 2025 Agricultural Literacy Week book.

Sue’s experiences as a biologist and teacher inspire her children’s books and her resources for parents and teachers. After studying learning and memory in insects, she moved to something more challenging: teaching high school science. Sue developed STEM programs for nature centers and libraries, coached an elementary math team, and worked as a journalist. She began writing her blog, Archimedes Notebook to provide beyond-the-book, hands-on STEAM activities for families and educators. Sue remains a curious naturalist, passionate bug-watcher, and community science volunteer. She is an Assistant Regional Advisor and PAL Coordinator for the Society of Children’s Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) New York: Western/Central Upstate region.
