Science and Writing Connections: Curiosity and Play

Susannah's talks and workshops emphasize importance of curiosity and play in both writing and science.

Susannah Buhrman-Deever is an award-winning author who writes books that are inspired by the living world. A former scientist, with a PhD in animal behavior, Susannah spent many years studying why animals do what they do. Now she brings her love of nature to young and curious readers through books that explore the battles between predators and prey with Predator and Prey: A Conversation in Verse, the importance of balance in ecosystems with If You Take Away the Otter, and the beautiful and wondrous diversity of pollination with Before the Seed: How Pollen Moves.

Susannah loves engaging with students of all ages. Her programming includes interactive presentations exploring the science behind the story, how she uses play to get un-stuck when working on a project, as well as poetry and nonfiction writing workshops. She is happy to tailor programming to fit a school's particular needs.
