WRITING AN ENGAGING MYSTERY: ATMOSPHERE, TENSION, PACING AND PREMISE - An engaging mystery successfully melds together a creepy or foreboding atmosphere, swift pacing, mounting tension to an exciting conclusion, and a killer premise. Join us as literary agent Christa Heschke provides tips on making sure your premise stands out. She’ll address how to add surprising twists to keep your reader in suspense as they eagerly turn pages, and how to create a captivating cast of characters. **Many tips can apply to any genre!** Christa will offer a limited number of paid written critiques and will be open to submissions by attendees. Christa Heschke graduated from Binghamton University with a major in English and a minor in Anthropology. She started in publishing as an intern at both Writers House and Sterling Lord Literistic, where she fell in love with the agency side of publishing. Christa has been at McIntosh and Otis, Inc. in the Children's Literature Department since 2009, where she is actively acquiring for all age groups in children’s.

The workshop will be recorded, and the recording will be available for one month following the event. Attendees will receive a link and a password by email within a few days following the event. Since this is a recorded event, no refunds will be issued.

Submission guidelines for the optional critique are as follows: Submit the first 10 pages or full PB (no more than 1500 words) in standard manuscript format as a doc (no pdf) by Friday, October 30 to [email protected]. The subject line of the email and doc title should read: LastName_Title_AgentLastName (ie. AmazingAuthor_TheGreatAmericanNovel_Heschke). Critiques will be returned the first week of December.
SCBWI is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. SCBWI Regions are managed by unpaid volunteers. Region funds support programs that benefit SCBWI members. Because fees paid to professionals for manuscript critiques are contracted in advance, these fees cannot be refunded. Refunds for critiques will not be granted. If a critique is not turned in on time, the attendee forfeits their critique.
