In this presentation, we will look at examples of different types of realistic fiction, with a focus on picture books and an eye to what we can bring into our own work. Presented by Adam Blackman, Acquisitions Editor for picture books for Cardinal Rule Press. There will be submission opportunities.

In surreal times, realistic fiction can ground us in the complexity, beauty, tragedy, and even absurdity of our world. While the rules of the form restrict us to characters, settings, and natural laws of the known universe, creative opportunities abound. In this presentation by Adam Blackman walks you through the different types of realistic picture books with a goal of developing ideas for your own work. Adam is the Acquisitions Editor for picture books for Cardinal Rule Press. A former bookstore manager and nonprofit director, Adam earned his MFA in Fiction from Sarah Lawrence College and has written for both adults and children. He works with writers on a freelance basis to shape and shine their stories. An active member of Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) and regular presenter at writing conferences, Adam lives in a hutch in Brooklyn, NY with his tween son and seriously adolescent bunny. www.adamdblackman.com.

Refund Policy

SCBWI is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. SCBWI Regions are managed by unpaid volunteers. Region funds support programs that benefit SCBWI members.

As part of the event planning process, Regional Advisors must sign contracts with venues, speakers, critiquers, vendors, and others who will provide services during a regional activity. Registration fees collected for an event must cover the cost of these contracts; therefore, refunds are the exception rather than the rule. In the rare case a refund is granted, it will always be less any credit card processing fees and any other expenses that cannot be recouped by the region. Requests for refunds will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
