VALUE ADDED NONFICTION What makes a nonfiction picture book stand out—and what can an author do before submitting to make the case for it stronger? Janet Bruins, founder and publisher of Picnic Heist Publishing, will share what a small press may be looking for in nonfiction and take participants behind the scenes of how Picnic Heist develops its nonfiction titles. We’ll explore how to identify a book’s genuine “value added”—not simply why its topic is important, but what this particular book contributes that existing titles do not. Participants will learn how to research relevant organizations and subject-matter experts and approach experts to help vet their stories. Janet will also discuss the less obvious but crucial benefits these relationships can bring to the writing, illustrations, and sales potential of a title. Experts and organizations may contribute to stronger back matter, endorsements, partnerships, bulk sales, events, and specialty-market opportunities. Participants will leave with practical steps they can take before submitting a manuscript to strengthen its credibility, clarify its audience, demonstrate its market potential, and help a publisher envision its path from manuscript to readers. Refund Policy
SCBWI is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. SCBWI Regions are managed by unpaid volunteers. Region funds support programs that benefit SCBWI members.
As part of the event planning process, Regional Advisors must sign contracts with venues, speakers, critiquers, vendors, and others who will provide services during a regional activity. Registration fees collected for an event must cover the cost of these contracts; therefore, refunds are the exception rather than the rule. In the rare case a refund is granted, it will always be less any credit card processing fees and any other expenses that cannot be recouped by the region. Requests for refunds will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
