ILLUSTRATOR INTENSIVE - Calling all illustrators! Ready to hone your character design and visual storytelling? Join us for an illustrator's intensive with Ely Mellet, Designer with Lee & Low Books. Based on Ely’s assignment, you will develop initial sketches for her review, apply her feedback, and prepare your final full-color piece to share during the Zoom Intensive on Sunday, December 7 from 11:00am - 3:30pm (CST). Meet the Instructor
Ely is the in-house designer at Lee & Low Books, where she works on a range of novels and picture books, including Guadalupe García McCall's Fall of the Fireflies and Benjamin Alire Sáenz's Last Night I Sang to the Monster. She holds a master’s in publishing from Pace University and was able to start her career in publishing with the help of the We Need Diverse Books’ internship grant program. Prior to Lee & Low, Ely was a designer for licensed properties at Scholastic, where she worked on a variety of book formats, including middle-grade, novelty books, and graphic novels for properties like Disney, Chris Bridges's Karma's World, and Doug the Pug.
Event Details:
SCBWI-Nebraska Webinar Coordinator Sheli Petersen will send the illustration assignment details and instructions to registered participants by September 15. Registered participants will have approximately one month to complete a preliminary sketch based on the assignment. Preliminary sketches are due no later than October 19. Ely will review and provide feedback on each participant's preliminary sketch by November 6. Participants will then apply feedback and submit the final art to Sheli on December 5. Optional 15-minute portfolio reviews are limited to 12 participants and are on a first-come, first-served basis. We anticipate them to fill quickly so register soon! Participant’s optional portfolio review time slot will be emailed individually in mid-October. Upon registration, illustrators opting for the portfolio review will submit the address of their portfolio website, focusing on artwork suitable for children’s publishing to Sheli at [email protected]. During each illustrator’s live critique via Zoom, Ely will review their work via their website.
This is a virtual Event. After registering, you will find your registration confirmation under My Events on your Member Home. The Zoom link for the event will be found under the green Meeting Info button as well as required handouts for this presentation.
RECORDING & REFUNDS
The intensive will be recorded, and the recording will be available for one month following the event. Attendees will receive a link and a password by email within a few days following the event. Since this is a recorded event, no refunds will be issued. Optional portfolio reviews will not be recorded. Because fees are paid to professionals for portfolio reviews as an exclusive offering and are contracted in advance, optional portfolio fees cannot be refunded.
