A workshop about unlocking the power of visual style and personal voice in artistic creation. This is not about copying existing styles or following trends but discovering and expanding a unique creative identity. Developing a visual voice requires courage, vulnerability, and a willingness to be authentic.
In this session, Jason Chin will describe his creative process, focusing on his newest book, HURRICANE. He will take students through his illustration process from story boards, to book dummies, to finished paintings. Jason will talk about doing visual research, text/picture interaction, watercolor techniques, finding the narrative thread and more.
This workshop offers a practical and realistic view of the feedback process to help illustrators navigate and integrate publishers' direction into the development of art for publication. The ever-important conversations between you and your art director need to be met with open-mindedness and flexibility along with awareness of your strengths and valuable contributions. The mutual goal is to reflect the intention of the text AND shine a light on your unique visual skills to ensure this artful collaboration has the best chance for success with its audience and in the marketplace.
